Nagui Rouphail
Full Professor
Dr. Rouphail received his BS in Civil Engineering from Cairo University in 1972, and his MS and PhD from the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio in 1977 and 1981, respectively.
Nagui Rouphail is the former Director of the Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE) at North Carolina State University. Also, he holds the rank of Professor in Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) at NC State University. Previously he served as Assistant and Associate Professor at the University of Illionis in Chicago. Dr. Rouphail is an internationally recognized scholar in highway capacity and operations, traffic simulation and intelligent transport systems, and the interface of traffic flow and vehicle emissions. During full academic carreer he has chaired theses and dissertation committees for over fifty graduate students, of which 17 have successfully completed their doctoral degrees. He has published nearly one-hundred refereed journal articles. Dr. Rouphail served as a member of Highway Capacity and Quality of Service (HCQS) and had leadership roles in both ITE and ASCE technical committees. He was a major research contributor to several chapters in the 2000 Highway Capacity Manual. He is also the lead author of the Signalized Intersection chapter in the Traffic Flow Theory Monograph published online by FHWA. He was the sole author of a chapter on Traffic Congestion Management in the recent Handbook on Environmentally Conscious Transportation published by John Wiley & Sons. He served as Associate Editor for several transportation journals including Transportation Science, Transportation Research Record and the Journal of Intelligent Transportation Systems. Dr. Rouphail has carried out international collaborative research with the Danish Road Directorate in Copenhagen, Denmark, The Royal Technical Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, Seoul National, Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon and The University of Aveiro in Portugal. |

Senior Research and Assistant Professor
Claudio Guarnaccia is a senior researcher and assistant professor at the Civil Engineering Department of University of Salerno.
He took the MSc (2004) and PhD (2008) in Physics, at the Physics Department of the University of Salerno. His research activity is focused on the application of Physics to Engineering and Biomedical problems. Main stream of research is Acoustics. He works with several national and international research institute, such as the Institute of Acoustics and Sensors of the CNR (Italy), the "Institudo de Matematicas" of the "Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM)" or the University of Aveiro (Portugal). He is member of several national and international organizations, such as Italian Acoustics Association (AIA), International Commission for Occupational Health (ICOH), World Scientific and Engineering Academy and Society (WSEAS). He is editor-in-chief of the "International Journal of Education and Information Technologies" and associated editor of "WSEAS Transactions on Systems" and "International Journal of Mechanics". In addition, he is referee for several international journals, such as "Applied Acoustics", "journal of Environmental Management", "Sustainability", "Energies". He is author of more than 100 papers in internatinal journals and proceedings of international conferences with referee. He was invited in several conferences, also as "plenary lecturer", to present the results of his research. |
Asad Khattak
Beaman Professor and Transportation Program Coordinator
Asad J. Khattak is a Beaman Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering, University of Tennessee, Knoxville and Transportation Program Coordinator in the Department. He is affiliated with the UT Center for transportation Research, where he works on research and educational projects related to the Southeastern Transportation Center and NURail University Transportation Center. He has recently established the Initiative for Sustainable Mobility, a campus-wide organized research unit.
Khattak has over 25 years of research experience and over 20 years of teaching experience in the transportation field, after completing his Ph.D. He has been invited internationally to work at University of Oxford in England, the French National Institute for Transport and Safety Research, known as INRETS, Ajou University in South Korea and University of Aveiro, Portugal. He has authored/co-authored 103 scholarly journal articles and 52 technical reports to research sponsors. His research work has been presented at numerous international conferences. As a principal or co-investigator, he has successfully obtained 59 sponsored research and educational projects totaling more than $8 million. |
